The Rijeka Carnival program which starts on 17th January and lasts until Ash-Wednesday gathers more than 20,000 participants and more than 600,000 domestic and foreign visitors. Large media companies watching both nationally and abroad, the occupancy of all accommodation capacities in Rijeka and its surrounding areas and an increased consumption in catering and commercial facilities out of season, have positioned the Rijeka Carnival as the 3rd largest in the world.

Denis Razumovic Razz is Croatian jazz saxophone player and composer, born in Rijeka, a multiple award winner as a prominent Croatian alto saxophone player. Listen to him in "Manhattan bar" at Ambassador Hotel Opatija where he will perform with his band on 17th of January, at 21:00.

The period between Saint Anthony's Day and Ash Wednesday is carnival time. The town of Kastav has a Carnival Statute which orders that on the first day of carnival time the Zlatna broskva (golden kale) award is presented to the best masked person of the past year. During the carnival, maškarani tanci, masked dances are held; balinjerada, a competition to create the most original means of transport is run and the zvončari (the bellmen) are welcomed. On Ash Wednesday, the last day of carnival, the Pust, as a traditional culprit for all the last year’s troubles is burnt. The explanation of the verdict is called pusna napoved (the carnival chronicle).
